Exploring Computer Storage in Our Computer Science Class

Hello everyone! Today in our Computer Science class, we delved into the fascinating topic of computer storage. Understanding storage is essential to grasping how computers save and retrieve data, and our students enthusiastically explored the various types and formats of storage devices.

1. Learning About Storage Types

We began the lesson by introducing the different types of storage devices, including HDD (Hard Disk Drive), SSD (Solid State Drive), and NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express). Students learned about their unique features, advantages, and limitations, including:

  • Speed Differences: NVMe is the fastest, while HDD is the slowest.
  • Physical Form Factors: We discussed how these devices differ in size, weight, and structure.
  • Pros and Cons: From cost-effectiveness to durability, each type has its own strengths and weaknesses.

2. Comparing Storage Options

To deepen their understanding, students examined a chart comparing storage types. We looked at their connections, including SATA and M.2, and discussed how these affect their performance and compatibility with different systems.

This hands-on activity helped students visually compare and contrast the options, reinforcing their understanding of which type of storage might be best for different applications.

3. Physical Storage Formats

Students then explored the physical form factors of storage devices. Using a printout, they identified the main formats and connections, noting how the design and size of these devices influence their placement in a computer.

4. Activity: The Sandwich Topping Game

To wrap up the lesson, we played a fun and engaging Sandwich Topping Game to better understand how memory works in a computer. Each student took turns repeating the previously mentioned toppings while adding a new one, testing their ability to recall sequential information. This game highlighted the importance of long-term memory, much like the role of storage in a computer.
